What is Açai?

Açai berries grow on palm trees in the rainforests of South America. They look very similar to blueberries and are packed with antioxidants, nutrients, and are notorious for all of their health benefits. It has its own rich, sweet, distinct taste that is unique and earthy. Who would’ve thought that something so decadent could be so good for you.

What are the Benefits of Açai?

Antioxidants content:

This is by far the number one most talked about benefits of Açai berries. To give you an idea of how beneficial this little purple berry is we have to understand a little about antioxidants. The antioxidant content in the food we eat is measured by an Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) value. Here’s an interesting fact, Did you know that Açai berries contain an ORAC value 15 times greater than blueberries? That means you would have to consume 15 servings of blueberries to get the same antioxidant value in one serving of acai!

Fiber:

Açai is packed with fiber which helps lower cholesterol, keeps you full longer, and helps stabilize blood sugar. Since our sorbet is made with the whole fruit rather than concentrate, the seeds make it nutrient dense and full of fiber. Each bowl of our Açai sorbet contains 12 grams of fiber and provides you with nearly half of your recommended daily fiber intake!

High omega fatty acids:

Açai berries contain a high level of omega 3, omega 6, and omega 9 fatty acids. Fatty acids are important for the health of our heart, brain, skin, eyes, hormones, and have many other benefits like preventing high cholesterol and inflammation. The fatty acids are contained within the seed and because the seeds make up 80% of the berry, it’s important to eat the whole fruit. Yep, once again we nailed it with our whole fruit Açai sorbet!

Anti inflammatory:

Did you know that Açai berries contain a compound called anthocyanins that give the berries their deep purple color and are known to fight off free radicals? This compound is anti-inflammatory, anti viral, anti bacterial, and is known to fight off chronic disease like cancer and diabetes. Yet, another reason to indulge. Sounds berry good to me!

High nutrient content:

In addition to all the benefits already mentioned, Açai also contains vitamins and minerals like vitamin C, vitamin A, calcium, chromium, zinc, iron, copper, manganese, magnesium, potassium and phosphorus. Now we know why they call it the purple gold of nature. Truly it stands up to its name.
